Polymechanic
Polymechanics create device components and production equipment using metal, plastic and composite tools. These range in size from a tiny mechanical watch screw to a turbine wheel. They work with lathes, milling, drilling and grinding machines, often computer-controlled. These young professionals program and service machines, monitor production, commission devices and facilities and maintain them thereafter.
Requirements for the four-year apprenticeship
- Completed high school education
- Good grades in Geometry and Math
- An interest in machinery and metalwork
- An understanding for technical interrelationships and mechanics
- Manual dexterity and finesse
- A flair for spatial perception
- Detail-orientated work methods
Future prospects
- Completing a vocational school (BMS) certificate during or following the apprenticeship
- Professional exams for Automation Technician, Process Specialist or Manufacturing Specialist
- Master Craftsman exams for Industry Foreman
- Federal VET (Vocational Education and Training) qualifications as Technician specializing in, e.g. Machine Construction, Production or Industrial Engineering, Electronic, Product and Process Design
- Engineering degree in Machine Technology, Systems Engineering or Mechatronics
