From sensors to solutions – a story of change

2024年9月3日
Jan Giger, Head of Business Unit Elevator & Escalator, explains how CEDES is evolving from a supplier of elevator sensors to a company offering hardware and digital solutions. Naturally, this shift comes with a tremendous amount of change, which is exciting and challenging at the very same time. Let’s dive deeper.

Light curtains are relatively simple sensors (however not to be underestimated technically) that have become standard in almost all elevators sold and modernized globally nowadays. The elevator industry today faces challenges: A key topic for the industry is the shortage of skilled labor.  Alongside scale and the data-driven possibilities very large OEMs have, efficiency gains, digital capability and enablement of additional revenue streams are key to success.

Here is where CEDES strategy and vision come into play. We leverage the expertise gained over the past decades with light curtains and many other sensors. On that solid foundation, we are building intelligent solutions that help the industry to solve the named challenges. But how does that really work and how does that influence CEDES as a company?

Skills

CEDES has mastered the design, production and marketing of elevator sensors for years. Offering solutions such as CEDES Elevate or the data hub that also integrates emergency communications requires an additional set of talent to ensure we create solutions that truly add value and solve customer needs. In fact, adding strong elevator domain expertise as well as know-how in digital products is an absolute key to execute on the strategy. Today, we can say that integrating the Elevate team and recent additions to the CEDES team show the commitment to this point.

Processes

From product design all the way to marketing, the processes and structures needed in this endeavor are different. While the feature set of sensors is given upon product deployment, digital solutions are updated and extended regularly, continuing to drive value for customers. The integration into customers’ processes is much deeper. This means that we need to keep track of all assets and ensure that we have skills and processes in place to update the assets in the field and support our customers in getting the maximum value from the solutions we provide.

Partners

Naturally, an organization like CEDES does not have the resources to master all aspects of such solutions on its own. Openness and finding the right partners to work with are key to success. You might have come across one of our partnership announcements, for instance the cooperation with 2N on combining an A17.1-compliant emergency call solution with CEDES’ IoT capabilities. Furthermore, the integration of the Langer & Laumann door drive into the CEDES IoT hub demonstrates how our partners can leverage our IoT platform for the benefit of the customer. Visit us at the upcoming UNITED Convention in Atlantic City to explore these possibilities with us.

Key Point: Belief/Change Management

Having made sure that the vision, skills, processes and many other pieces of the puzzle are in place, there is one more point to make this journey a success: In essence, the belief in the positive outcome of this evolution and with that the aspect of managing the change. Leaving the comfort zone does not come easy for many of us. Speaking for myself, having been with CEDES for more than 20 years, this change initially took energy and time to get comfortable with. Having lived it, I can say that I am excited to see how we are gradually uniting as an organization behind this goal and embrace change, while being proud of what we achieved in the past. Today we can say: guiding and shaping this process is key to our future success and the top priority task to all managers at CEDES.

Having gone through the key points in our journey form sensors to solutions, what matters in the end is that we succeed in adding value for our customers. Two great examples on the outcome of the discussed change at CEDES are our offering of IoT-enabled products alongside CEDES Elevate , as well as the iDiscovery solution. The enabled products allow you as customer to enhance features of your own solutions, as well as to connect to CEDES Elevate. The iDiscovery solution provides a full set of essential safety functions for elevators out of one sole system that is very easy to install and configure. This exemplifies how we build on expertise around sensors and create solutions that matter! We continue on this path - stay connected with us – we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Jan Giger
